Objectives: To offer a comprehensive vision of theology as a science, help to identify faith’s essential and contingent elements, and prepare students to “give an account of the hope within us” with “gentleness and respect” (1Pt 3:15-16).

Learning outcomes: Students will be able to: 1) analyze, compare, and evaluate theological arguments; 2) appreciate strengths and weaknesses of representatives of three theological styles: Ressourcement theologians, Thomists, Newman; 3) compose short essays, a ten-page elaborato, and a comprehensive elaborato using good theological method and correct style.

Contents: To understand better the whole of the First Cycle of Theology, we will adopt the perspective of fundamental theology, especially as this touches on theological method, the possibilities and limits of doctrinal development, and the value of apologetics.

Methodology : The seminar will rotate between sessions of analysis and evaluation, punctuated by presentations, disputes, weekly syntheses, and more substantial elaborati.

Means of evaluation The grade for Semester I will consist of the shorter elaborato of 10 pages and active participation. The grade for Semester II will consist of the weekly syntheses, the presentation, and quality of participation through the course of the whole year.
