  • Accademic Unit
    Faculty of Theology
  • Course
    Baccalaureate in Theology

Objectives: There are three principal objectives: 1. To assist students in developing a proper understanding of the material taught in the first year; 2. To introduce students to different approaches to the discipline of theology; 3. To teach students how to do research and theological writing according to the norms of the Gregorian University, including use of the resources offered by the University’s Library (User Education).

Learning outcomes: The desired results are the following: 1. The students will be able to understand better the discipline of theology; 2. The students will be able to articulate the Church’s teaching on Scripture, Tradition, Magisterium, Christology and Trinity; 3. The students will gain a basic understanding of different approaches to the work of theology; 4. The students will better understand theological research and writing according to University norms.
Contents: This seminar, taught in English, will be organized as follows: I semester – Beginning with the importance and role of theology in the life of the Church, the class will further cover Fundamental Theology, Divine Revelation, Magisterium, Christology and Patrology. II semester – The focus will be on different approaches to the discipline of theology and Trinitarian Theology.

Methodology : The student will be asked each week (except for the first) to write a one-page paper covering the assigned reading and be prepared to engage in a class discussion based on those same readings. In addition, the student will be asked to present one of the weekly topics covered in the reading as an introduction to the class discussion. By the end of the II semester, each student is expected to write a seven to ten page research paper on a topic approved by the Professor.

Means of evaluation: I semester: Each student will be evaluated on his or her compliance with the requirement to submit weekly papers, as well as demonstrating the effort, through the weekly paper and participation in the class discussion, of having tried to understand the topics covered. II semester: The criteria are the same as the I semester with the addition of an evaluation of the individual presentation done by the student on his or her assigned topic and the seven-page research paper, including the paper’s adherence to the typographical norms of the University. In both semesters, the student will be evaluated on his or her use of the resources offered by the University’s Library.
