Africanizzare le missioni: volontà romana e resistenza missionaria nell'Africa Orientale Britannica (anni 1930-1950)

Edouard Coquet Ecole française de Rome/ Sorbonne Université Paris

The third meeting of the Permanent Seminar on the History of the Papacy will be held on Wednesday 19 April. Édouard Coquet, Member of the École française de Rome, will deal with the theme of the renewal of Catholic missionary strategies in French and British sub-Saharan Africa from the 1930s to independence. In particular, he will focus his study on the apostolic delegations established by the papacy in these imperial territories. During the seminar, Édouard Coquet will present the lines of research on the Apostolic See's action in favor of the Africanization of the clergy in British Africa, based on the case of Uganda, where the first African bishop, Msgr. Joseph Kiwánuka, was appointed in 1939.
