GIOVANNI PAOLO II ED I SERVIZI SEGRETI COMUNISTI

The aim of the academic session is to reveal the activities of the communist secret services against John Paul II. The first part of the session will be devoted to the period when Karol Wojtyła was archbishop in Cracow. A proper reading of archival documents on the activities of the secret services, preserved in the Institute of National Remembrance in Poland, allows us to assess the attitude of Wojtyła, but also to critically address the accusations made against him recently in the public space, based on a biased use of these documents. The second part of the session will be the presentation of the book “Agca non era solo”. It contains the results of the judicial investigation into the assassination attempt on John Paul II on 13 May 1981. It was conducted by the Institute of National Remembrance between 2006 and 2014. It was possible to reach new, previously unknown documents from the archives of the communist secret services. On the basis of these, extensive activities in preparation for the assassination were indicated, as well as those aimed at covering up traces and disinforming public opinion. On the basis of the documents, it is now possible to identify new clues concerning the assassination attempt on John Paul II.
