- MISSIONARI MARTIRI E CRISTIANI NASCOSTI IN GIAPPONE
Five centuries after the expulsion of Christian missionaries from Japan, the historical, diplomatic and cultural value of the Christian evangelisation processes in the East have left important tangible and intangible marks. The testimonies that can be read and deepened today, especially by observing and listening to the heritage of the people living in these territories, is absolutely of extreme interest to all humanity.
Thus, 400 years after the martyrdom of the Dominican Angelo Orsucci of Lucca (1622-2022); 440 years after the Tenshō Embassy in the West: (1582-2022); 470 years after the death of Francis Xavier (1552- 2022) and 400 years after the canonisation of Francis Xavier (1622-2022) and a few years after the apostolic journey of His Holiness Francis to Japan (23-26 November 2019), an international exhibition has been promoted by the Archdiocese of Lucca by Archbishop Msgr. Paolo Giulietti and Professor Olimpia Niglio. The exhibition, organised in 6 sessions, intends to retrace the main stages of the work of the missions in Japan and to renew the memory of the religious and diplomatic work carried out by the missionaries who, even paying with their lives, made it possible to weave a thread that, stronger than ever, continues to unite the entire world.
This extraordinary experience of evangelisation handed down to us through history helps us reflect on the value and significance that Christianity continues to have in the Rising Sun, which the exhibition describes through 30 descriptive panels and video documentaries available at
