Rome at a Distance: The Papacy and Papal Rome in the Early Medieval World

On Thursday, 10 October, in room F007, at 5pm, the first appointment of the new annual cycle of the permanent seminar in History of the Papacy will be held. On this occasion Caroline Goodson, from the American Academy in Rome and the University of Cambridge, will give a lecture entitled ‘Rome at a Distance: The Papacy and Papal Rome in the Early Medieval World’. Goodson will focus in particular on how the papacy and Papal Rome interacted with distant corners of the early medieval world, in particular North Africa, the Frankish kingdom and England. His approach will especially consider the material aspects of these interactions, rather than the ecumenical and theological ones. Goodson will analyse why and how people travelled to Rome, what they experienced during their visit, and what information and knowledge about Rome those who were far from the Urbe in the period between c. 700 and 1100 had.
