The popes and the epigraphic topography of medieval Rome

On Friday, 1 March 2024, the fifth appointment of the Permanent Seminar on the History of the Papacy will be held. On this occasion, Anna Blennow from Göteborgs Universitet will give a lesson entitled "The popes and the epigraphic topography of medieval Rome". The researcher will focus on the strong interrelation of epigraphic production and reception with the topography of medieval Rome and the history of the popes since the Damasian period. In particular, Blennow will trace the development of the 'epigraphic areas' of Rome, providing a new view of the 7th-9th century epigraphic Syllogies and their way of organising the history, memory and sacred space of the Urbe.
