THE QUR'AN IN ROME

A large part of this volume is the outcome of a conference entitled Il Corano a Roma. Cattolicesimo e studio dell’Islam in epoca moderna, held at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) in Rome on 1 and 2 March 2022. The event was jointly organized by the University of Naples L’Orientale, the ERC Synergy Grant The European Qur’an Islamic Scripture in European Culture and Religion 1150-1850 (EuQu), the Gregorian Centre for Interreligious Studies and PISAI.
This volume offers a series of essays on the study of the Qur'an and Arabic in early modern Catholic Europe. Focusing on the circulation of manuscripts, translations and printed books, the essays highlight how Catholic Orientalism contributed to the birth and spread of Western Islamic studies. The protagonists of this season of Islamic studies were missionaries, travellers, members of religious orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, Carmelites), scholars, Eastern Christians, converts and other prominent figures of Catholic culture of the time.
