Diploma in Christian and Medieval Antiquities

The Diploma in Christian and Medieval Antiquities aims to provide a solid, essential preparation for those who wish to embark on historical, art-historical, and archaeological studies. The course is dedicated in particular to the knowledge and research of the history of the Church of Rome and the papacy, from its origins to the Middle Ages, taking advantage of the extraordinary opportunity to be at the centre of the Orbis christianus, in the city that is the seat of the Successor of Peter.

The Documentation Workshop will offer students the opportunity to be in direct contact with written and monumental sources, through textual analysis, the reconnaissance of monuments, and the cataloguing of historical and artistic artefacts, also with the help of innovative IT tools, such as the GIS Forma Urbis Romae Pontificiae.

In the Documentation Workshop, students are introduced to the Geographic Information System FURP, an innovative IT tool for the history of the Rome of the Popes, aimed at the creation of a database that collects and makes usable through interrogation and visualization on a digitalized map of the city, the data relating to the movable and immovable assets commissioned by the popes and the sources referring to them

 

The Diploma in Christian and Medieval Antiquities is recognized as an accreditation qualification, following the procedures laid down by the Fabbrica di San Pietro, for qualification for the service of guide in St. Peter's Papal Basilica

 

Admission

To be eligible for the Diploma, one must hold possession of a Baccalaureate or Bachelor's degree (three-year) degree a satisfactory understanding of the Latin language and one of the following languages, in addition to 
Italian: French, English, German, Spanish and Portuguese.

The university offers the course free of charge of Latin language to those who do not pass the verification.

Final Elaborate (5 ECTS)

The final paper is produced under the direction of one of the Diploma Lecturers. It must not be less than 20 pages (52,500 characters, including spaces) and more than 25, excluding bibliography and historical or artistic documentation (documents, images, plans).

Students are required to choose two of the optional courses offered for a total of 6 ECTS

Teaching Method

Classroom lessons with image projections, educational visits to monuments and sites of Christian and medieval Rome, and practical exercises are planned.
