Devid Giovannini, Sacramento e tipologia. Gli apporti di Joseph Ratzinger e Paul Beauchamp

Abstract - Ratzinger’s thesis interpreting the notion of sacramentum as a translation of the nexus between typos and mysterion deserves to be rediscovered and reevaluated. The contribution intends to show how the juxtaposition of the biblical theology elaborated by Beauchamp allows the integration of some categories that Ratzinger’s thought lacks to achieve the instance pursued and, at the same time, to re-evaluate its theoretical scope. On the basis of a typology more attentive to the dramatic structure that configures the revelation-faith relationship, the sacramentum-typos-mysterion nexus can find its legitimacy and a more balanced configuration, disposing the space for an advancement of the research.

Fernando Chica Arellano, La lotta alla fame in Joseph Ratzinger - Benedetto XVI. Riflessioni scaturenti dal suo Pensiero

Abstract - Benedict XVI’s contribution to the fight against hunger in the world, and even before that, his reflection on the moral and social issues that plague our time, cannot be grasped in its fullness if we do not consider, first of all, the horizon of meaning within which Joseph Ratzinger’s theologizing is set. There is, in fact, an inseparable connection between the search for truth and meaning for one’s life and the commitment to integral human development and to satisfy hunger in the way.

Starting from this assumption, this contribution intends to question the multiple typologies of hunger that first the theologian Ratzinger and then Pontiff Benedict XVI encountered, in order to dwell on the orientations of meaning and operation that he offered us in his numerous interventions and pontifical documents.

Alberto Ferreiro, In Die Sancti Iohannis: St. Vicent Ferrer on the Feast of John the Baptist in a Catalán Sermon

Abstract - This sermon is about Zechariah and Elizabeth and the extraordinary events surrounding the conception and birth of John the Baptist. Zechariah and Elizabeth were paragons of love of God, austerity, chastity, and deep trust in God. Believers would do well, according to Vicent, to follow in their footsteps, minus the dubtà of Zechariah, if they were to have any hope of attaining Paradise.

Luca Di Gioia, L’ontologia del transumanesimo. Un’analisi comparativa

Abstract - The article tackles the issue of the ontology that is presupposed to transhumanism and traces it back to a platonic and nihilistic form of panentheism. By an analysis of various points of both convergence and divergence between panentheism and theism, an analysis aimed also at clarifying what are the presuppositions inherent to any form of authentically theistic metaphysics, I highlight, by reference to the thought of Maximus the Confessor, the importance of creation out of nothing and of the concept of otherness in ontology, as well as their relevance for our way of thinking, also in ethical and practical terms, about being.

Josep M. Manresa Lamarca, Padre Xiberta: Percorso Intellettuale ed Ecclesiologia

Abstract - B. Xiberta is a privileged witness of the ‘rediscovery of the Church’ which marked the theology and lived experience of the Church in the 20th century, especially with the teachings of Vatican II, where Xiberta participated as peritus. Already in his dissertation Clavis Ecclesiae, written when still a youth, Xiberta indicated the importance of the ecclesial mediated in the sacrament of Penance, as sign and instrument of the reconciliation with God. However, his ecclesiology was further developed in several articles, and especially in his Tractatus de Ecclesia Christi¸ which unfortunately has not yet been published. Xiberta’s main contribution to ecclesiology was to indicate de Church as a work of the Trinity, through which Christ constitutes us as People of God, and through the mediation of his Word and Sacraments unites us intimately to Him as his Body. In this article, presented in commemoration of the centenary of Clavis Ecclesiae, Xiberta’s biography and intellectual biography are presented, together with the main points of his rich ecclesiology.

Joseph Carola, S.I., Bartolomé Xiberta’s Patristic Methodology in Clavis Ecclesiae

Abstract - Bartolomé Xiberta’s thesis Clavis Ecclesiae, defended at the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1921, argues that the res et sacramentum of the Sacrament of Penance is reconciliation with the Church. While God alone reconciles the serious sinner, that reconciliation takes place in and with the Church. To demonstrate his thesis, Xiberta employs a multifaceted patristic methodology that historically and theologically appeals to the consensus patrum, elaborates a theory of doctrinal development, engages heretical and schismatic witnesses, considers ancient liturgical practice, and enlists the aid of speculative theology in order to clarify certain ambiguities in positive theological sources. According to Xiberta, the third-century decree of the Roman Callixtus provides the necessary catalyst for the doctrinal development that articulates the ancient Church’s faith regarding ecclesial reconciliation. Tertullian’s Montanist tract De pudicitia ironically offers clear evidence for the ancient Catholic Church’s reconciliatory theology and pastoral practice. Cyprian plays a key role in Xiberta’s thesis. But the Catalan Carmelite appeals chiefly to Augustine of Hippo to support his thesis. In doing so, he overcomes early twentieth-century anachronistic readings of the great North African Church Father and establishes Augustine’s pivotal witness to ancient Christianity’s understanding of the serious sinner’s reconciliation with the Church.

Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm, De Clavis Ecclesiae a Lumen Gentium 11

Abstract - In commemoration of the centenary of Bartolomé Xiberta’s dissertation, Clavis Ecclesiae (1922), supervised by Maurice de la Taille and defended in 1921 at the Gregorian University, the author demonstrates how the dissertation, initially negatively received, was progressively accepted in pre-conciliar theology. New ecclesiological sensibilities (together with the liturgical, biblical and patristic movements) allowed a deeper comprehension of Xiberta’s thesis. This in such a way that, in their presentation of the sacraments in Lumen Gentium’s second chapter, the conciliar fathers employed a phrase recalling the importance of reconciliatio cum Ecclesia, indicated by the Carmelite theologian forty years before the council.

Valfredo Maria Rossi, Clavis Ecclesiae alla luce dell’ecclesiologia della Scuola Romana. Influenze e nuove prospettive

Abstract - This article examines whether the theology of the Roman School had any influence on the ecclesiological and sacramental thought of Xiberta. This article will be divided into three parts to achieving this aim. First, I will outline the main aspects of Xiberta’s ecclesiological-sacramental thought. Secondly, I will present some elements of the ecclesiology of Passaglia, the most brilliant theologian of the Roman School. Finally, I will compare Xiberta’s ecclesiological-sacramental insights with Passaglia’s ecclesiology to see if and how Passaglia’s insights somehow inform the reflections that Xiberta will develop.
