Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology

The Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology aims to offer a broad and articulated view of the Christian mystery, a formation in scientific methods as well as in the sapiential dimension of theology, and a preparation for the teaching of the discipline (licentia docendi).

The Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology consists of a two-year specialization that covers the following areas:

  • Christological-Trinitarian area (Christology and Soteriology, Trinitarian Theology, Pneumatology, Mariology);
  • Ecclesiological-sacramental area (Ecclesiology, Sacramental Theology, Liturgy, Ecumenism);
  • Anthropological-eschatological area (Protology, Theological Anthropology, Theology of Grace, Theological Virtues and Eschatology).

Admission Requirements

The Baccalaureate in Theology or the five-year philosophical-theological course with an overall average of 8/10. If the candidate has obtained the Baccalaureate:

  • in a non-ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology, the Faculty reserves the right to evaluate the equivalence to the average of 8/10 by means of an Admission exam;
  • in an ecclesiastical center that does not confer canonical academic degrees, the candidate will have to take an Admission exam.

Language Requirements

  • knowledge of the Italian language (B1);
  • knowledge of two modern languages selected from English, French, German or Spanish (B1);
  • knowledge of Latin (Latin II) and Greek (Greek I).

Enrollment

Enrollment can be done by accessing the online platform. After completing all the required fields, the candidate must attach, in addition to the administrative documents:

  • the transcript of the Baccalaureate in which the final grade is highlighted;
  • the certificate of the courses and exams taken in Philosophy;
  • the certificate of 100 hours of the Italian language (for foreign students).

Program of Study

A total of 120 ECTS is required to obtain the academic degree, divided as follows:

* 60 ECTS for courses and seminars chosen from two possible paths:

  • First path, the student will have to follow 13 courses (5 compulsory, 2 common: one from another Department and one from Dogmatics, 5 proper, 1 elective) and 4 seminars (one in the first semester, 1 or 2 in the second or third semester);
  • Second path, the student will have to follow 15 courses (5 compulsory, 2 common: one from another Department and one from Dogmatics, 7 proper, 1 elective) and 3 seminars (one in each of the first three semesters);

* 30 ECTS with the submission of the Licentiate Thesis written under the direction of a professor of the Department, subject to the consent of the Director of the Department who will countersign the Form: “Request for Licentiate Thesis Director”;

* 30 ECTS for the successful completion of the final exam which will focus on the Licentiate Thesis as well as on a series of theses presented in the Tesario of Dogmatic Theology.
