  • a Diploma in Spirituality

Diploma in Ignatian Spirituality

offered in English in the 2024-2025 academic year

The educational tradition of the Society of Jesus, and hence that of the Pontifical Gregorian University, flows from Saint Ignatius’ desire, and that of his first companions, to share a profound spiritual experience with many people – lay persons, priests and other religious. Saint Ignatius spent many years of his life walking the streets of Rome, looking for people with whom to converse spiritually. Some of them were eventually accompanied by Ignatius or his companions in doing spiritual exercises to deepen their relationship with God.

In the light of this long tradition, enriched by the scientific tools afforded by academic spiritual theology, the Department proposes a Diploma in Ignatian Spirituality, taught in Italian and in English (alternate years). The two-semester programme requires a total of 60 ECTS, which are garnered as follows:

  1. a) 10 courses between prescribed (abbrev. “ARI” + 3 numbers) and optional (abbrev. “AO” + 4 numbers): 30 ECTS in total;
  2. b) 3 seminars: 12 ECTS in total.

In addition, a synthesis paper (18 ECTS) must be prepared under the direction of a professor. It must be at least 30 pages long, excluding bibliography, and should be submitted to the General Secretariat in digital form (PDF format) via upload (cf. the Ordo).

The choice of optional courses and seminars (must be approved by the Director of the Department of Moral Theology and Spiritual Theology. The programme also includes extra-curricular activities such as guided tours of Ignatian sites and spiritual conversations.
