EC2013  CONTEMPORARY JEWISH COVENANT THEOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT ON CHRISTIAN UNDERSTANDING OF THE COVENANT (A.A. 2024/2025)

Objectives: To familiarize the students, through a detailed and critical reading of texts, with the writings of three important Jewish theologians of the XXth century and how it relates to contemporary Christian understanding of the Covenant.

Learning Outcomes: Teaching the students to handle contemporary Jewish theological material and to learn how to read such text critically

Content: For both Judaism and Christianity, the existence of a Covenant (Brit) between God and the Children of Israel is a deeply rooted theological belief. From a Jewish perspective, it serves as the theological foundation, which legitimizes the centrality of the Commandments, as well as imbuing theological meaning to the reality of Jewish History. For the Church, the “never revoked“ Covenant stands at the core of Post Vatican II theology. Yet, in the aftermath of the Shoah, having encountered and witnessed the cruel reality of a silent and absent God, how is one to understand the continuing existence of the Covenant?

Methodology: The class will explore the writings of three key Rabbis and Jewish theologians of the past century, attempting – each in his own way – to offer a viable path to maintaining faith in this cardinal doctrine of rabbinic Judaism. The study and discussions will allow us to explore innovative thinking, and in doing so, will consider how these developments shape the nature of Jewish-Christian dialogue and how Christians theologians have responded to them.

Means of Evaluation: The evaluation will take the form of a paper (elaborato), details of which will be discussed individually with the students.
