Objectives: Students should learn to interpret primary historical sources about jewish-christian relations in the middle ages and early modern period and to assess competing theories in contemporary scholarship on the history of anti-jewish attitudes.

Learning Outcomes: Students will be familiar with the scope of jewish-christian interaction in the european middle ages, how that experience compares to interactions between muslims and jews in the middle ages, and how elements of medieval christian ideas about jews can be deployed in later manifestations of anti-jewish hatred. they will be prepared to question established beliefs about the antiquity and unchanging nature of what came to be understood as antisemitism. they will be prepared to consider the jews as a part of medieval and early modern european society.

Content: This course will survey the nature of interactions between jews and christians in the european middle ages and early modern period. we will study christian attitudes towards jews, social relaitonships between jews and christians, and the ways in which jews were an organic part of medieval and early modern society.

Methodology: The majority of the course will be based on discussions of primary sources and contemporary scholarship. There will be several mini-lectures to set the historical context and frame certain historiographical issues.
