Objectives: The students will acquire basic concepts of Jewish thought that will enable them to understand scholarly literature on the subject.

Learning Outcomes: The students will study the main currents of Jewish thought in the modern era (1700-1945) through the writings of prominent European Jewish thinkers.

Content: We will begin it with the innovative kabbalistic theology of R. Moshe Hayim Luzzatto (RAMHAL, 1707-1746), the dispute between the Hasidim and the Mitngadim, and the philosophy of Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786). We will end it with Zionism, Haredism (Non-Zionist Orthodoxy), and the philosophy of Martin Buber (1878-1965).

Methodology: Frontal lecture + class discussion.

Means of Evaluation: Elaborato.
