XP2006  SEXUAL ABUSE IN INSTITUTIONS: A FOCUS ON THE CATHOLIC CHURCH (A.Y. 2024/2025)

Objectives: The course will introduce the systemic concept of abuse, and the institutional/organizational dynamics that allow abusive relationships to develop. It will also bring the students to reflect on clericalism and hierarchicalism in the Church, and on the Church’s responses to the abuse crises as well.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, the students will be able to recognize the systemic elements and dynamics of the abuse in institutions, while taking into account the institutions in their own countries. They will be able to address issues of abuse of power, clericalism, and hierarchicalism in the Church.

Content: How institutional structures and dynamics can contribute to abuse or prevent it; reflection on structure, dynamics, institutional culture, and roles; mistakes made in the Church in the past and the proper remedies; abuse as a human issue; wrong versus appropriate institutional attitudes towards victims and positive/negative effects; failures versus adequate institutional responses in dealing with (potential) abusers and positive/negative effects; organizational convictions and interpretations of power, roles, and responsibilities; reflection on clericalism, hierarchicalism, and obedience.

Methodology: The course will combine lectures, readings, and seminar discussion.

Means of evaluation: Evaluation will be based on class participation and written papers.
