WBO240  FROM AESTHETICS TO A TRANSCULTURAL ENCOUNTER IN SACRED SPACES (A.A. 2024/2025)

Objective: Transcultural aesthetics, though it does not conform to traditional expectations for theories of art and aesthetic principles, offers a method for studying Sacred Spaces across cultures. \* 4f004c0045005f004c0049004e004b00310034000000\* \*kmkstart OLE_LINK14\*kmkend OLE_LINK14Based on this approach this course will introduce an epistemology of encounter in Sacred Spaces. It will develop a synthesized understanding of issues and problems of how Christians looked and look at Sacred Spaces of the non-Christian world and vice-versa.

\*\* 4f004c0045005f004c0049004e004b0039000000\* \*\*kmkstart OLE_LINK9\*kmkend OLE_LINK9Using objective methods from diverse disciplines, we will investigate what criteria the Sacred Space of different cultures have in common. The strength of the course lies in its transdisciplinary nature and in learning how to overcome prejudices in letting yourself be looked at.
Learning Outcome: The course will introduce the main methods of transdisciplinarity in the history and theory of Sacred Spaces. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to a) understand and critically analyze the main concepts of transcultural encounter in Sacred and liturgical spaces b) effectively use appropriate research terminology and methodology; c) describe the potential impact of a specific theory and experience of Sacred space as an encounter of art and religion of different cultures.

Content: Three aspects will be explored: 1. A clarification of the concepts of transculturality, inculturation and interculturality and transcultural aesthetics in comparison to the transcultural encounter in Europe, India, Africa, Korea and China, 2. \*\* 4f004c0045005f004c0049004e004b00310038000000\* \*\*kmkstart OLE_LINK18\*kmkend OLE_LINK18Modern methods and theories of different cultures will help to explore the complexity of transcultural knowledge of Sacred Spaces, and 3. The role and the relation between the artist, the artwork and the observer in different cultures.

Methodology: There will be interactive lectures, and space for questions and discussion. Site visits are also planned.

Valuation: Personal participation (30%), homework (40%), presentation (30%).
